Ode aan de Bijlmer

Door de jaren heen is er veel aandacht voor de Bijlmer geweest, met name over alles wat niet goed ging. De wijk die bij oplevering werd gezien als ‘stad van de toekomst’ werd al na 25 jaar deels afgebroken. Het utopische stedenbouwkundig plan van Siegfried Nassuth werd afgedaan als grote mislukking. De Bijlmer had en heeft nog steeds een stigma, vooral voor mensen die er nog nooit zijn geweest.

Ondertussen bestaat dit stadsdeel al weer een halve eeuw: al die tijd wordt er gewoond, gespeeld, geleefd en gewerkt en groeit er nu een derde generatie kinderen op.  Er zijn flats gesloopt en grondig gerenoveerd, het stedenbouwkundig plan is drastisch veranderd en er wordt nog steeds gebouwd; de wijk is volop in ontwikkeling. De kunstenaars in de expositie reflecteren in hun werk op  de stedenbouwkundige realisatie van de Bijlmer en de actuele hervormingen. Ze laten de Bijlmer zien als monument, als stedenbouwkundige vernieuwing, als utopie, als bijzonder en afwijkend of als jeugdsentiment.

Throughout the years the Bijlmer has received a lot of attention, most of it directed at everything that went wrong. Only 25 years after its completion, parts of this district, that had been envisioned as the ‘city of the future’, were already being demolished. Siegried Nassuth’s utopian urban plan had been dismissed as a major failure. The Bijlmer had, and still has, a huge stigma attached to it, especially for people who have never been there.

In the meantime, this district has been around for half a century, and throughout that time children have been playing there, and people have been living and working there. Already a third generation of children is growing up in the Bijlmer. Flats have been demolished, others have been thoroughly renovated, the urban plan has changed drastically and there is still a lot of construction going on – the area is still being developed. The artists in the exhibition use their work to reflect on the urban development of the Bijlmer and its current renewal. They show the Bijlmer as a monument; as an urban development; as an utopia; as special; as deviant; or as nostalgic.
