Dit jaar bestaat de Thami Mnyele Foundation Residency Award 30 jaar. Sinds 1990 actief en met een kleine groep bevlogen vrijwilligers is de stichting al jarenlang aanjager voor nieuwe narratieven en kunstenaars die tegenwoordig door steeds meer culturele instellingen worden gezien en omarmd. De stichting is een artist-in-residence die de (culturele) uitwisseling tussen beeldende kunstenaars uit diverse Afrikaanse landen, de Afrikaanse diaspora en Nederland bevordert. De Thami Mnyele Foundation is een van de oudste kleine internationale kunstenaarsresidenties in Nederland. 

De kunstenaars in deze tentoonstelling hebben met elkaar gemeen dat ze allen te gast zijn geweest als artist-in-residence bij de Thami Mnyele Foundation. Alle acht zijn ze afkomstig uit Afrika en de diaspora. Allemaal hebben ze nog steeds een band met Nederland of Europa; ze hebben zich hier gevestigd of reizen vanwege hun werk regelmatig heen en weer tussen hun thuisland en Europa.

De deelnemende kunstenaars hebben ieder hun eigen beeldtaal, hun eigen werktechniek en ze vertellen allemaal hun eigen narratief. Ze nemen elk zijn of haar eigen positie in binnen het internationale kunstenveld.

*Tien jaar geleden vierden we het 20-jarig bestaan van de Thami Mnyele Foundation met de tentoonstelling 20 jaar Stichting Thami Mnyele: een selectie van 25 hedendaagse kunstenaars.

This year, the Thami Mnyele Foundation Residency Award celebrates its 30th anniversary. Active since 1990 and with a small group of enthusiastic volunteers, the foundation has been a driving force for many years for new narratives and artists from Africa and the African diaspora. These new narratives and artists are seen and embraced by more and more cultural institutions in this current time. The foundation is an artist-in-residence that promotes the (cultural) exchange between visual artists from various African countries, the African diaspora and the Netherlands. The Thami Mnyele Foundation is one of the oldest small international artist residencies in the Netherlands.

The artists in this exhibition have in common that they all have been guests as artist-in-residence at the Thami Mnyele Foundation. All eight come from Africa and the diaspora. They all still have a connection with the Netherlands or Europe; they have settled here or regularly travel back and forth between their home country and Europe because of their work.

The participating artists each have their own visual language, their own working technique and they all tell their own narrative. They each occupy his or her own position within the international art field.
